This story was submitted to the People’s War website by Jamie, a pupil from Teversham Primary School on behalf of Betty Hogg and has been added to the site with her permission. Betty Hogg fully understands the site’s terms and conditions.

I was at school when a plane dropped a bomb on the school just down the road. I remember having to wear a gas mask and showing my identity card and knitting at school for soldiers. I never got evacuated. My dad got taken away. I liked helping at the hospital as a volunteer. I remember the soldiers’ uniform - it was blue with a red cross. There were 240 pennies in one pound and 1 pound was a note.
The Leys School was turned into a hospital in the war.
