Message 1 - H.M.S.Emerald Near miss

I was on board the Emerald the night
that bomb hit the Emerald it was
dropped by a bomber and actualy hit
the top of the ammunition hoist over
"Y"magazine the tail that the lads
are holding broke off the bomb went
over the side and exploded and caused
some considerable damage, the Emerald
stayed off the Normandy coast for a
further day'but had to return back to
England for repairs and then went back
to her station on the French coast.
The previous day to the bomb dropping
that magazine hatch had been left open
just imagine what would have happen'ed
if it had still been open' the hoist
would have been moved and those lads
would no longer be holding that "tail"
and I would not be typing this.
