I'm from Edinburgh. I joined the Wrens in 1942 (until 1945). At the interview they asked me about the organisations I had been in - I said I had been a Brown Owl... and so they sent me to the signals! When I got there - I discovered everyone had been in the Guides and Brownies!
I had never been anywhere before and was sent to Lowton St Mary, in Lancashire, for training. I travelled by train and was the only person to get off the train at that stop. No-one was there to meet me. I asked for HMS Cabbala and someone directed me - but because I hadn't arranged for anyone to collect me I had to walk the 1/2 mile, with my two cases, to the camp. I was challenged at the entrance, but had no idea what to say. They realised I was a new start and let me in. I began classes the next day.
The training was four months, but for two of them I was out of action because I got a huge boil under my arm and a big molar had to be extracted, too. I bvled profusely and thought I was going to die. I did semaphore with my arm in a sling - but passed!
I was in a Port Wall station, then went to Scapa Flow, Orkney, for the rest of the war.
