My Dear Frank
I hope you are getting on alright. Well Love Hitler has done it now. The only thing is you will have to be careful and look after yourself. Don’t forget will you love. I went to your house last night. Your mother said she sent letter Friday. She was worrying where you were. Anyway she got your post Saturday afternoon so she is alright now. I only stayed at your house till about 10.0 as it was thunder and lightning terrible and our Nora would have to go in by herself as Mother and Dad had gone to Gran’s. It was awful on the way home you can’t see a thing. I wasn’t windy of the dark but there were loads of people drunk standing on all the corners. I got the wind up when I had to pass them. Anyway I just got home when the gang were going up the road. Our Nora had a little cry as Les (was going away in the morning) this morning Sunday. She said something awful has happened so I said what and when they were at top of Grant Av there was a terrible flash of lightning and one of the balloons went up in flames and dropped. She said it looked awful. I went to town Saturday. I think I told you. Anyway I walked to Pierhead. There were hundreds of army men about. They are sand bagging all the Big Building. Well Love Sunday morning our Nora and I were up early and went to the Cathedral. At 9-30 Sunday morning they gave out on the wireless there will be an important announcement at 10-00. All please listen. Our Nora and I got 10-00 Car down. So we didn’t hear it. When we got in the cathedral there were chairs and the papers in all the sides. They must have been expecting a lot of people. Anyway I heard one of the men say they will all be staying in to hear the news at 10-00. The middle was only half full of people. on one of the sides. The service went on. The Dean read the lesson then he said Mr Chamberlain has just spoken on the wireless and his words are We are now at war with Germany. The Dean said he will repeat them. I don’t think he had any need to. Everybody heard the first time alright. It was terrible love. I didn’t know what to think. I do hope you will be alright. The Bishop gave the sermon. He was very nice. Then we had a few minutes silence and special prayers. All the ladies were sniffing. It was awful Love. When we came out we walked down to Lewis’ to get the Car. There were a lot of soldiers getting off Cars full kit and rifles.
(I do not have the latter part of the letter.)
