the first thing l remember about Jack is the tiger rug sent from India to his next of kin my Grandmother, his aunt. Jack was orphaned and made the army his career. l knew Jack from photo's and cards he sent Nanna. Jacks life was taken or given, who knows, in the horror of battle on the 3rd. April 1945, four weeks before the declaration of a peace. His remains lie in the Reichswald Forest cemetary in Germany. l am presently trying to find out about that last battle Jack took part in. Jacks sacrifice meant the end of the 'Giles' name. It also gave me my first experience of life is not fair! Why? because at a tender age my Grandmother showed me a letter sent to her from the King. The kings signature was l suppose in those days printed off in their thousands, not a real signature at all, a sort of tacky, short, 7"x4" poor quality piece of paper, which ended saying 'we pray that your countries gratitude for a life so nobly given in it's service may bring youi some measure of consolation." both my Nanna and me thought it rather ignoble.
