I was born in 1933.
During the War, the children were not evacuated from my town, but nonetheless it was a busy area, with bombing and troop movements. In the months before D-Day, troops were moved into the area and were living in their lorries in the streets. Naturally the children were very curious about these vehicles, and the soldiers made them feel very welcome.
During the summer nights, when it was hot, the men came and slept on people鈥檚 front lawn.
We always knew that these men would be going to war, but we never knew when this would happen. Then one night, we heard the lorries moving, and they were still moving throughout the next day. The men were throwing down money to the children, as they knew that British currency would be useless where they were going.
The road seemed very lonely after that, very quiet. We called out our goodbyes but no one knew what happened to the individual men, and that was D-Day with the Mulberry Harbours which were also made locally.
