The black out restrictions on households were difficult enough but when it meant street lights were non existent and vehicle headlamps shrouded or masked, it presented, not only dangers, but headaches to drivers who had both blackout and thick fogs to contend with.
For youngsters, there was a sure way of making money. Fogging – offering your services as guides to motorists, indicating the curb with you walking along holding a white hanky. Many a shilling was earnt in the winter evening after choir practice.
The this kind gesture was not without it’s dangers as I remember walking along, guiding my blind driver , me looking back to see if he was following, when I walked straight into a pillar/post box. From this I got a right shiner of an eye.
