I remember my grandmother recounting the story of how she once stood in the road watching a spitfire chase a German fighter, machine guns blazing. It took place directly overhead and though it lasted but a few seconds she recalls specifically the spent cartridge shells from the machine gun bullets come raining down around her. Many people came out of their houses to scoop them up from the pavements and gutters as to keep as 'souveniers'.
Apparently there was also a school nearby (how local I'm not sure)where children in the playground were machine-gunned during a daylight bombing raid. How appalling!
