One embarrassment, if you can call it such took place in wartime. Briefly it happened when i was with a colleague called Spud. This was his nickname- his surname was Smith.
Spud and i were miles out between our lines and the enemy. We were unarmed owing to wire carrying duties for a patrol beforehand and were on our way back.
Coming down a farm track we heard voices up ahead. We decided in an instance it was not English and dived through the hedge, into a ditch. We froze until they were well past. We were wet when we emerged. Although the voices only spoke broad Scots, we agreed that we had only lost our dignity and not our lives!
