Roy Beautement was my uncle, he died at Dunkirk, but we have no idea exactly how he died.

However, there is a family 'legend' that, when ordered to retreat, he did not. Instead, he turned his tank to face the enemy and attacked. Does anyone know if this is true? Thank you.

Message 1 - Roy Beautement - How did he die?

You will find details of your uncle here About links

Regarding the 'legend' I think your uncle would have been properly trained and would not have disobeyed a direct order; such a lone action, without knowing the full picture or plan, would have endangered both himself and probably others.

For example, sometimes troops are ordered to fall back to draw the enemy forward, as the sides move forward in a pincer movement. Troops cannot decide for themselves, any such disobedience would result in a court-martial. I am sure your uncle was a brave and well trained soldier.

Kind regards,

Peter
