My parents took in boarders during the war lots of them from all different places ,Men who worked on demolishion, the docks, servicemen, and people needing shelter. We lived in the air raid shelter the house given up to the boarders cooking and musical evenings bombing permitting. To feed these Hungry men took some doing I would imagine I was A part time School boy /errands and standing in line seemed to be more important to my Mum then School.
One task was to visit the City which very little remained to buy Horsemeat from one of two shops in the town on the strict instructions to only go to the one which displayed HORSEMEAT FIT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION no one Knew but me.
Another task when things were easier and I was attending school more often Iwould be given sixpence when I went to school to buy a breadloaf 4.1/2d with the change I was to buy a carrot to eat on the way home, The Local fruit shop was run by a man called Hawksley who was one of the great cigarette card collectors he sold his spares I collected a few sets which I still have today( why CARROTS MY MUM THOUGHT THEY IMPROVED YOUR EYESIGHT ).
Sweets on ration we overcame this buying liquorish root and blak liquorish from Mr HASTIE the chemist ,We bought candles from the hardware shop and chewed them like chewing gum untill found out and lectured by the special constable about the dangers
