My dad served in the war. He was in France and the Germans were on his tail.A young lady took him into her home and hid him. I do not know how he got it but he came home with a German overcoat. While he was in France he nearly got shot by British troops who thought he was a German but he was only keepinf warm. Our family used that coat for many years - it was an extra layer on the bed.
I remember the Broadway in Meir being built. My sister and I went to look at it but it was all in darkness.
The aeodrome at Meir was just behind. I remember one of the planes knocking a chimney off a house in Harrowby Road as it came in to land.
I remember living on rations. When the black market kicked in(a local chap but I'm not saying who!) we could get almost anything - gammon, eggs, cheese.
Mother was very resourceful. After we had a potatoe dinner she would make a potatoe pie with the leftovers. Dad grew a lot of vegetables but we would get some off the neighbours. Mother could make lobby go a long way.
