We were married on July 19th shortly after D-day my hysband to be was in the RAF and had five days of compassionate leave for the wedding. Due to the generosity of family and friends i was able to have a white dress because they donated clothing coupons. A beautiful Moire Satin dress with a small train. My cousin arranged beautiful flowers a WAAF friend also decorated the church schoolroom where a reception was held. The honey-moon was in Oxford at a hotel called the Randolph which still is there today. A very memorable day.

Message 1 - War Time Wedding

Posted on: 24 May 2005 by JohnFlanagan

We have read your little story with great interest.

We are getting married on July 16th 2005, but we are taking our guests back to July 1944, as we are having a 1940s themed wedding.

We attend many WW2 re-enactments so this seemed the best choice for us.

All our guests are coming in costumes from the period. We have a fantastic band booked called "Sentimental Journey" who do everything from Glenn Miller and The Andrews Sisters to Vera Lynn.

Our venue will be the lovely pier in the old sea side town of Southwold, Suffolk.

We have vehicles from the period bringing Bride, Groom and Best man etc.

A wartime buffet tea has been laid on, and our venue is to be decorated with items from the time.

We are too young to remember the war and the terrible suffering that people endured, but we are celebrating the fashions and the times of enjoyment that people made to shine through in those dark days of uncertainty
