My family in World War II.

My Grandma Doreen Evens

My grandma was evacuated when she was 11 years old.
She stayed with an elderly couple at Borth in North Wales. She started school when she got there. She didn鈥檛 like it at first then it was okay.

My Grandad Dennis Payton

Dennis Payton was a farmer in Ely Cambridge. He wanted to fight in the war but he needed permission. He needed permission because a farmer鈥檚 job was very important. They were called a reserved occupation. This meant that they had to carry on working on the farms to provide food and milk. When he did get the permission he trained as a rear gunner in the Royal Air Force. He trained only in a couple of weeks because the war had already started. A rear gunner鈥檚 job was to sit in a small compartment in the back of a bomber plane and shoot the other planes behind.

John Evens, my Great Uncle.

My great uncle John was 15 years old when he was ordered to join the Army as a soldier. He was very upset when they told him but they gave him no choice. Towards the end of the war when the Japanese soldiers
invaded Singapor he was captured, but luckily he鈥檚 still alive now.
