10th January 1909 in Didcot, Berkshire, a boy was born at that time, into a small family of 5 with plenty of other relatives. Not much is known of his early life, except that he loved acting in plays and was a great organiser, also, his father(or may be it was his Grandfather, not sure, was in the Army and fought in the Boer War his medals are still in the family). His father Albert James fought in the Great War and went to France. When he returned to Didcot, he was suffering from shellshock and was never the same again. However, he took up the career of fireman until he met and married his final wife Lena Jane (after his first, second and third wives had died, that is, from natural causes). So, somewhere we have 100s of relatives we know nothing of.
Laurie's sister Trixie won a scholarship to Harvey's Grammmar school in Folkestone and his father paid for Laurie to go as well. He was a talented boy and did well at the school, but when his mother died, he ran off from home at age 14, said he was 15 and joined the RAF. Laurie did his training at RAF HALTON and graduated as flight aircrew. From there he was posted to India, the Viceroy's region. to be continued .................
