Wireless operator with the RAF, who was sent on bombing raids, over railways in Germany. He was finally shot down over Livorgno, an Italian village. His life was saved by a caterpillar parachute, but broke his foot on landing. An Italian farmer hid him, until the Germans came to the village. He then gave himself up to save the farmer from being killed. The German soldiers then marched him through the snow with his broken foot in agony with no food or drink.
He was then placed in a prisoner of war camp for 12 months, during which time his wife had not contact with him and feared for the worst. He escaped, along with an Australian prisoner, on a motorbike.
After the war, he was given the Golden Caterpillar Award. He died in 1958, still trying to contact the Australian prisoner he escaped with. The Australian prisoner was only known as his nickname Red.
