My grandfather wrote in his diary of May 1941 "Our little son 'Louis' died at Johnstone Combination Hospital 7.15pm 10.5.41" Three days after the Greenock Blitz. A traumatic time for the family. He wrote the following words -
" The sirens shriek as the children sleep
The throb of the bombers is heard
The hurried throb of our hearts also beats
As to shelter with our loved ones we fled
The crashing of bombs, the hissing of steam
The murderers have found a mark
And many souls before the Creator appear
As we listen and pray in the dark.
A raging inferno is Greenock's plight
As fires are raging in dead of night
The innocents suffer from Man's mad rage
As they hope and pray in their burning cage.
Our little son 'louis' heard this call
The poor little a call
Of 'Our Father' in Heaven who loves us all
And in his love He called him home.
