Joan and George Brush celebrated their Diamond Wedding in May 2005. They met in the second world war, Joan was from West Bromwich and was in the ATS. George was a Yankee - a GI from New York.
George won 2 purple hearts in the war and saw action in Italy and Normandy, but this story is not about his combat action. It is the story he told at their Diamond Wedding celebrations about how they were destined fort each other.
George was recuperating from his wounds in Tamworth Hospital. he was already courting joan at this time.Feeling much better one day he decided to take a trip out. He went to Tamworth railway station to see where he could get to. As he was styudying the timetable Joan came up to him.
"Why didn't you meet us on the platform?" she demanded. Apparently Joan had written to George saying that she was bringing her Mom and Dad to meet him, and detailing the time and date of their arrival. George knew nothing of these arrangements. He had never received the letter. he could have been anywhere else. He had been planning a trip.
George reckons at that moment he knew they were meant to be together. There was no denying fate. Of all the stations in the Midlands Joan (and her Mom) happened to be at that one at that time.
They have now been happily married for 60 years. They live in Jaffrey, New Hampshire, USA, and keep close in touch with family in the Midlands.
