During the war we had a Collie dog called Fido. Years ago, dogs just wandered about and were rarely fastened up. Fido was a little rascal; he stole brushes and mats etc. from people's homes. Once, he came home with a pair of ladies knickers, the old sort with long legs and at the time, we lived at a pub and my dad hung them on the line to see if anyone claimed them.
When war began, we were warned about gas attacks and one night, Fido came home with an empty, galvanised fire bucket, which banged very loudly as he dragged it along the pavement on his way home, and though It scared everyone in the street thinking it was a Gas attack, Fido was forgiven as he was a favourite with all of the neighbours.
