I was 22 and was working at the Maresfield Camp Nr. Uckfield in the NAAFI when I was offered a job at the Brooke Bond Mansion, The Rookery, Deepdene, Dorking. This used to be the HQ of the famous tea company but was taken over by the Army for their Officers and NCOs to do 6 week courses during the War. There was only me and another woman working there in the NAAFI and we were looked after by a Mr. & Mrs. Edwards and their daughter who used to live opposite. I was married at the time but did not see my husband for 3 1/2 yrs. when he was sent to Germany. We had a great time at the Brooke Bond mansion; we used to go to the dances with the officers and there was never one unpleasant incident. The Americans used to carve their initials on the old wood throughout the building, not realising how old it was. There were always shortages of things such as knicker elastic, safety pins and nylons but the Americans always came up trumps.
