During the war, I lived at Nether Burnie Farm Cottages. On the other side of the river was Manbeen Aerodrome. I remember aircraft coming down and crashing — all the airmen were killed. One came down one night behind the farm. The planes were bombers and most of the sorties were to Norway.

The airforce personnel used to come and buy eggs etc from my mother. The used to swim in the river at the huge deep pool called the Shank House pool.
