We had to do guard duty when two of us stayed up and manned the radio transmitter during the night. We were issued with truncheon-like sticks for our protection, and it was fairly nerve racking being up when it was all so dark and quiet, especially as we were only young girls of twenty one. One night we heard footsteps outside, and began to feel terrified. We plucked up the courage to go outside, clutching our truncheons, only to discover it was just a cow! It was such a relief — amusing to look back on now, but really scary at the time. Still, the cow was probably more afraid of us!
