I was working in Fens Hackenby in the Land Army picking potatoes, sugar beet and harvesting the corn. When we started we had back aches and pains I would of come home but I couldn`t face my parents dissapointment. we worked on the land with Germans on one side and Italians on the other both prisoners of war.
There was an American Air Force Base near by. They were very kind to us, they used to give us gifts of Spam and once they gave me a pair of Nylon stockings. And when I got home my Mother was very cross and furious with me and wanted to know what I did to get nylons. She said I had bought disgrace upon the family and took them off me and said, "you don't get nylons for nothing!" But my father wrote to me a week later to say she was wearing them. I had wonderful times in the Land Army and my family did not go short of any food. I worked with a very kind land owner and we I came back off leave he asked me if I had had a nice time and I said' "queing for 1 pound of potatoes when I picked hundreds of them." A week later my mother wrote to say she had received a sack full of potatoes. I went in the Land Army so that my family would be well fed and I was lucky that they were.
