My father, Ernest Hisgrove was in a reserved occupation during the war, but enlisted within the Home Guard, rising to the heady rank of corporal.

Apparently during the early days of the Home Guard, there were no arms to issue to the unit. Eventually Dad was issued with a wooden mock up of a rifle, with which to look the part.

I understand that he was allowed to bring this formidable weapon home. When he did so, my Mother was not pleased. She would not allow him to bring the "rifle" in doors, so it stood guard outside propped against the wall.

Message 1 - Home Guard Rifle

My Dad was also in a reserved occupation throughout the war. He too joined the Home Guard. As we lived in the far South West, in Cornwall, it was his job to patrol u[ and down the cliffs carrying a broomstick instead of a rifle. This was even more amusing as the factory where he worked was engaged in munitions work, and was creating live weaponry for the front.

It must be some coincedence that your family had to defend a munitions factory with a broomstick. Because in my tale, where my father had a wooden rifle, we only lived approximately 400 yards from the Royal Small Arms factory in Enfield, where Lee Enfield rifles and Bren guns were being made and repaired.
