My only brother, Ronald Allen - I have no sisters - joined the Navy on his seventeenth birthday in August 1939. I was born in July 1939, seventeen years younger than Ron! I was told that my christening was brought forward so that Ron could be there before he left for the Navy, and he was, in fact one of my godfathers.
Ron's first ship HMS York which he joined on 2 May 1940. He survived the attack on the York on 26 March 1941 in the harbour at Suda Bay in Crete. As the York was put out of action he eventually joined HMS Havock on 12 April 1941.
Ron lost his life on 23 May 1941. I can vaguely remember being told at some time that the Havock was attacked by enemy aircraft somewhere between Crete and Alexandria, but I would love to know more about what happened.
This story is not really a memory of WW2, as Ron died before my second birthday. Ron is "My brother who I can't remember but who I'll never forget".
If anyone can help please get in touch.
