As a young school boy growing up in what became known as the !North East Coast Town ( The town name not Broadcast to confuse the German Airforce it did not work because they came back night after night and dropped bombs on the city much of which was destroyed ) My recollection of school days was one of collecting shrapnel after the raids taking it to school to show to others and to see who had collected the biggest and best.
Attendance registry one morning became somewhat disrupted when one of the school mates was showing the latest piece of shrapnel to his surrounding mates who failed to answer their names ,Teacher What have you got there Boy? ITS A BOMB SIR CAME THE REPLY INDEED IT WAS AN INCENDARY BOMB COMPLETE WITH FIN. EVERYBODY OUT!!! THIS INCIDENT CURTAILED OUR SHRAPNEL COLLECTING FOR SOMETIME AFTER THAT
