i lived in chelmsford with my mother and sister because my father was in the 8th army. He served the 6 years without injury and came home about twice in that time, so my mother had full responsibility of us girls. Because Marconi was situated about 100 yards from where we lived. it was prime target for bombing. Every night when the sirens went off we were not allowed to stay in our home.
So therefore, the ARP wardens would escort us to the Shire hall in Chelmsford where we would have to stay until the all clear went. Unfortunately Marconi did get a direct hit and the Germans seem to leave us alone after that for a short time.
