I was born in 1942 and fortunately do not remember anything about the Second World War. My father died of war wounds just before my third birthday so my mother came back with me to live with her parents in Bradford. My uncles were in the Armed Forces and one in particular who still lived at home with my grand parents was in the R.A.F. I can still remember him in his uniform. I can also remember my first sight of a banana. One day my uncle came in and called to me. He pointed the banana at me and said, "Bang". I screamed with fright. It took quite a lot of coaxing from him and my mother before I would attempt to taste the banana. I still think of that when anyone talks about their war stories.
