I remember the whistling bombs vividly. I was 11 at the time and my younger sister. Audrey was 10 mth old. There was an air raid and we were sent to the air raid shelter in our street, Seventh Street. Wallsend. My sister crided for her milk bottle and my mum returned to the house. I heard the whistling noise and then silence and thought our house had been hit. I started to scream, my dad who was an air raid warden slapped me across the face to calm me down. I was panicking, 5 mins later my mum returned to the shelter all black, the house had not been hit but the blast had forced all the soot down the chimney and blasted my mum form head to toe with soot. I laughed all night as the sight of my mum.
Another memory is my father working at Coach & Horses pub in Wallsend. He used to collect donations for the soldiers at Dunston Hill hospital to buy them cigarettes and at weekends he used to bring some of the soldiers to our house for Sunday lunch and for their families to visit.
I also rememeber a land mine dropped in Holly Avenue and a whoel family being whiped out apart from one family memeber who had hid under the cupboard under the stairs.
