Lance Bombardier Patrick William White
Lance Bombardier Patrick William White, No. 6462311, Royal Artillery, 69th Searchlight Regiment, 458 Battery
9 May 1941, 02.00 Hours
Operations, H.M.S. 鈥淲atchful鈥
Lance Bombardier Patrick William White was one of a party of Lewis Gunners defending a beached ship, S.S. Ethel Radcliffe, at Yarmouth Sands, against an attack by Junkers 87 dive-bombers. By skilful control of his gun crews he was able to bring the concentrated fire of his guns to bear at the moment the enemy aircraft was at the bottom of its dive at 200 feet. Many direct hits were scored, and the guns continued to fire until the attack was beaten off. Lance Bombardier White showed initiative and coolness in trying circumstances, and set a splendid example to the men under his command.
Lance Bombardier White was awarded the Military Medal. He received his decoration at the hand of H.M. King George VI at an investiture at Buckingham Palace. Both his wife, Hilda, and their son, Peter, attended the investiture. The award was recorded in the 鈥淟ondon Gazette鈥 dated 4 July 1941.
