I had a boyfriend in the army. We had known each other since we were children, and before he went away he wanted us to get engaged, so we did. We were engaged for three years, and I used to write to him regularly.
I joined the Wrens, and I was stationed in Plymouth. My boyfriend used to say that I should enjoy myself, I shouldn't stay in just because he was away, and so I used to go out with my friends - other Wrens.
I was stationed in Plymouth, and once I had been on leave with a friend in London. We were on the Cornish Express, from Paddington to Plymouth, on our way back. We started chatting to two sailors - and within a year I was married to one of them!
When my fiance came back I had to disengage myself from him. I wanted my mum to stay with me when I talked to him, but she wouldn't; she said, "No, I'm going shopping - you've made your bed and you've got to lie on it!"
Anyway, we were married for 58 years, and had two boys, and my previous fiance got married and had two boys too; and we all stayed friends.
