My cousin had been scalded by boiling cabbage that had exploded. The doctor鈥檚 wife had come home from Switzerland where she had been sent for recuperation for TB. She had brought some oranges home with her and the doctor brought two of them for him, my sister and I had half each.
I remember taking treacle and brimstone on a morning. Also cod liver oil at school everyday with our milk before morning playtime.
We used to go to Sheffield, Gleadless, to see my Aunt Kathleen. We got off the bus in Pond Street and saw all the bomb damage, all the big stone building were all ruined.
One Christmas we had a red rosy apple, it was lovely. Both my sister and I kept it for two or three days and just polished it up. My cousin got one and he saved it for his dad who was serving in the army and it went all dry and wrinkly.
