I joined the Women's Land Army when I was 21 and was sent to train on a farm in Robertsbridge.
I went to feed the pigs one day and I was shoved face down in the muck. We had to ride a bike to work and I had never ridden one before.
My landlord found one on a refuse tip and did it up for me. My friend and I went to the top of a slope in a field and she said go down there and at the bottom start pedalling.
I did and of course I fell off in the wheat field at the bottom. I never told the farmer I had flattened his wheat.
I soon learnt how to cycle and had to ride two miles to work each day. We lived on rabbit pie and I had to teach the apprentice how to skin rabbits so he could hold it and smoke a cigarette at the same time.
I am now in a wheelchair and I think it stems from those days. I was milking a cow called Violet and for some reason she took a dislike to me one day. She kicked me and I flew through the air and damaged my knees. I think that is why I am like I am now.
