I met Michael at Convent Garden Opera House when they had dancing there. I went with my sister, Margaret and three friends. My husband, Victor was in the RAF and stationed in Norfolk. I was in my early 20s. The three of us would go every Wednesday. We made a pact that we would dance with whoever would ask us to dance, and that we would all go toghether and come home toghether and not accept alcoholic drinks. We just wanted to have a fun, safe time. I met Michael there. He was a sergeant in the American 8th Army from Missouri and was staying in a hotel near Marble Arch.
I only met him the once but we began to write to each other. He sent my children sweets and my husband cigarettes! My husband, Victor wanted to show him around London but he never got annual leave. All the US forces were shipped out suddenly. I sent him a silver bracelet with coins (silver three penny bits) on for his sister as that was the fashion of the day.
He was in the invasion on Omaha Beach. That was the last letter I heard from him. I often wonder whether he survived.
