I was born in Norwich and at about 5 moved to Barnet where my Dad worked in munitions. With the many bombs we spent a lot of time in our underground shelter. My family decided to evacuate. I went to an Aunt & Uncle who lived at Helena Road, off Dereham Road, Norwich. I hated being away from my family and was in a very strict household. My Mum came to fetch me after two years and took me home to London on the train, although there was still a lot of bombing. My Mum always seemed to be able to provide good meals. My Dad especially looked forward to cycling home from work to be met with a nice meat pudding, after dodging the bombs. Mum made lots of puddings; my favourites were jam and suet pudding.
I was glad to be back in London with my friends but remember the doodlebugs in particular — hearing the engine stop and waiting to find when this flying bomb would land and explode. I was one of three children and my Granny had five children who all lived to be over 90.
