Janet was a baby in 1944 and it was washing day. Her mother, Mrs Elizabeth Collison had finished her washing and was in the garden hanging it out while Janet was asleep in her pram next to her. As she pegged the clothes to the line she heard a popping noise but did not know where it was comming from and ignored it. Suddenly her neighbour Mrs Watts came running out yelling for her to take herself and Janet indoors as quickly as possible. The popping she had heard was indeed gun fire from a German aeroplane emptying his guns before returning to Germany.
Later when Mrs Collison collected her washing from the line, she found that much of it had bullet holes in it.
