This story was submitted to the People鈥檚 War site by a volunteer from Lincolnshire CSV Action Desk on behalf of J Gibbons and has been added to the site with her permission. Mrs Gibbons fully understands the site鈥檚 terms and conditions.

I was born in Iceland in 1942; Dad was stationed there during the war and met my mum, Octavia Ost. He was Sid Johnson from Wolverhampton. After the war ended, they got married but when I was 6 months old we were shipped back to England. Mum was very seasick crossing the North Sea on a troop ship and some of the soldiers looked after me during the journey.

She didn鈥檛 go back home to Iceland for 30 years during which time she had a further 4 children and worked full time. In 1979 she won the bingo so went back to visit her family but due to the length of time since she had last seen them she walked passed one of her sisters in the airport, not recognising her.

One of her other sisters married an American serviceman and she also had 5 children and went to live in New England so the war was responsible for scattering my family across the globe.
