I was a messenger during the Manchester blitz in 1941. In December 1941, at the age of 14, I went to work in a factory which made heavy diesel engines, etc which were used in sub power stations. I worked 10 hours a day working on the machines. I earned 12s/6d and had ato pay 4d a week for my insurance stamp. When I was 15 I was regualrly working nights to. Whilst I worked there, the factory was bombed but we still had to get on with our work once that was over. When I was 16 I got a pay rise to 19s/6d a week.
