A memory I have from Cyprus was when I visited a friend who had been in the services in the war and I was asking about some of her experiences as I was at the time doing some research for a book which I had been writing and needed some background material because it is based on pre-war motor-racing. She had a big smile on her face and grinned that perhaps there were some things best left, but a few words did emerge. One of the stories she related was of her experiences when she worked as a WAAFs in the Hertfordshire area. There were plenty of boys about as she put it, and naturally fell for one young man and a wedding date was set. It was war time, and rations were scarce and where could she get a wedding dress from. There is always a station grape-vine in all departments and someone told her to apply to Elstree. This was the film studios nearby. When she got in contact they proved very helpful, not only could they find a dress, but what one did she want. All with a history of being worn by the stars as they were part of their costume department. Move over Ava Gardner. Arrangements were made and she duly received a box with a wedding dress in on the understanding that after she had worn it for the day could she send it back for future use. It made her day. While she was working there she found that she had been billeted to a small building on the far side of the airdrome.
This was her base for a while and when she was posted to another for six months. On her return to her original billet she was informed that a young airman had occupied it and had died in action. He must have like it so much that she continually felt his presence in the room at night. She asked to be moved.
