Just as the war ended I went teaching at an all boys school. Some boys in a slip of the tongue called me Sir but unfortunately this stuck. One day the local Vicar came to give a talk on the outcome of the war.He mentioned that it was a great feeling that everyone was free from oppression and we could rejoice. He went on to say that in future everyone should be free, including all people and animals to roam, as and were life takes us.One boy was sat enthralled by this and when school was finished, he went round to farms and pigeon lofts, letting all the animals and birds free. There was hell on.
During my time there, Christmas was looming and the traditional Nativity Play was organised. All parts including Mary were played by boys.Unfortunately quite a few boys contacted ringworm. The doctor shaved their heads and applied a bright blue oitment. The mothers on seeing this, were mortified and the lads themselves, to save their embarrassment, started to wear balaclava helmets,to school. The Nativity Play went ahead and my husband and wives of teachers, were invited. My husband could not control his amusement when he said "That's the first time I've seen Mary in a balaclava".
