War started on my eldest brother's 14th birthday. He cried because it had happened on that day. We remember buying Walls Ice Cream which was at half-price that day, owing to war being declared.
I remember the first air raid over Croydon Aerodrome. I was at a Brownies meeting when the sirens went, but it turned out only to be a reconnaisance flight, but we watched the plane come down and the pilot descending in his parachute from my grandparents' flat, which was above ours.
My father was amonst one of the first to be called up because he was on reserve from the army and was training gunners.
I remember watching the Battle of Britain from our front garden - a sight I have never forgotten.
We were evacuated to Wakefield in 1941 as my father was stationed at Pinderfields Hospital which was then an army camp. Our train was bombed as it left Kings Cross Station, and we were even able to watch the plane as it followed the train.
