This story was submitted to the People's War site by Jody Ball of the Stoke CSV Action Team on behalf of Charles Whetnall and has been added to the site with his permssion. The author fully understands the site's terms and conditions.

When I came back to Crewe, I was sent to the Labour Exchange to look for work. When I got there I was asked "What can you do?" I answered "I'm a telegraphist". "Do you have any qualifications? Any school qualifications?" I replied "No". When I told them where I had been during my time in the Navy throughout the war, they weren't very impressed. They told me I was to be a General Labourer, gave me a brown pinstripe uniform and told me that there was a free bus (a converted ambulance) to take me to work every day.
