My unit, the 1st Royal Ulster Rifles had reformed after the DDay op and we were expecting to do the air landing over the River Rhine, but owing to the German attack in the Ardennes pushing the U.S Army back, they needed much more help to stop the German advance towards Brussels. We were put on 24 hour alert and to be prepared to move across the English Channel and to go into action to help stop the German advance. It was very, very cold with snow up to 2 feet deep but we managed to get to the River Meuse by Christmas on 1945 and with the help of the rocket fireing typhoons, managed to stop the advance of the German tiger tanks crossing the River Meuse and pushing the Germans back 20 miles. Our unit was then pulled out of the line and reformed and prepared for the airborn landing across the River Rhine on the 24th March 1946.
