We went down to Madras to load for Arakan ...we got on a little freighter about 5,000 tons, the whole batallion and a company of Gurkhas and the Colonel asked me for a meeting...and he said the Captain's best laying hen had been stolen..."Find out who has done it!", which we never did of course. The sort of thing they would do is compromise you... and bless my soul during Ramzhan - they always have a break and invite guests for feasts - and my best friend Khurshid Alam Khan, his uncle had the round table conference with Ghandi in 1935, he was a wonderful farmer, but he represented the martial races at the conference. I went to have supper with him and bless my soul if we didn't have chicken....he served the chicken. I shall never forget it.
