My first memory concerns the immediate period before the outbreak,when a mysterious group of pylon like structures appeared on the hill above Ventnor. Our next-door neighbour, who was in the Territotial army came home one day and said that all the cars in Ventnor had been unable to start that afternoon, and thid was attributed to the aforesaid structures. Whether this was a bit of local folklore or deliberate misinformation I hane never been able. Some deliberate misinformation I was to witness later in the war, but more of this later.
