In September 1940 I was one of the first pupils to go to the Harry Cheshire School in Kidderminster a very large modern secondary school and I was filled with horror to be the first to be called on the school register on the first day.

It was a beautiful new school and it had lots of large glass windows. When it was bombed by a stray German bomber in 1941 people thought that it was all those windows that had shone in the moonlight and made it look like a factory and that was why it had been bombed.

It was very sad and a great shock to us children but there was, as they say a silver lining.

We shared our school with Moseley School pupils who were evacuated from Birmingham. Because of all the damage we went to school in the mornings and they went in the afternoons. So we thought some good came out of the bombing!

The one thing I loved about school was the dinners. They were lovely. We had meat pies, great slabs of potato scone and wonderful steamed puddings and custard. Always tasty.I remember we always had a little bottle of milk and our weekly milk money was two and a half pence.

One of the first things the girls had to do was make our own school dresses in needlework class in green, red, yellow or blue check cotton according to which house we were in.
