This is a short account from my grandmother, she is always happy to recount her experiences to us. Nan allways tells us about the rationing in the war and how she would fake pregnancy in stores to get fresh fruit such as bannanas. The Americans were also a great way to get things, she and her friends would chat up American soldiers at dances to get some tights, cigaretts or chocolate. However one day her best friend got stung! She had met one particular soldier who said he would be able to get her some fresh meat, so a few days later she met the soldier again. She handed him the money and he gave her the package, she was thrilled and as the package was a fair weight she was excited about having a good dinner that night. Sadly she had not thought to check the package before she had parted with her money, and when she got home to unrap the meat was most dissapointed to find that within the wrapping was no more than a common house brick!!
