NORA COMMON
My name is Nora Common I am 87 years old. I was born in Gateshead, Tyne & Wear in1916 (my maiden name was Cotterill). I later got married in 1959 to Richard Common and became a step mum to Edith.
During World War 11 I worked for the NAAFI (Navy Army Air Force Institute), based at Dame Margarets nursing home at Washington in Tyne & Wear. I took care of young soldiers nursing them back to health and keeping their spirits up by serving them with cups of coffee, tea and other refreshments. I worked in the NAAFI for 12 years. I remember saving my sweet rations every week and sending them home for my parents.
One of my other tasks was to work in the sewing room at the nursing home where we made the nurses uniforms. I was particularly good at sewing and made all my own clothes.
As told to the student鈥檚 of Churchill Community College on Friday 28th November 2003.
