I went to school in Wymondham in Norfolk. I was originally from London, but with my father away in the Royal Navy my mother took me with her to live with relations.
We lived about 20 minutes by bike from the US 3rd Air Division base at Hethel and I would often cycle down to watch the planes. I suppose I was about ten at the time. I clearly remember one occasion where I saw a plane of fire. The people tried to bale out but weren鈥檛 high enough, and they basically roman candled into the ground.
On another occasion, a German plane flew along the London to Norwich rail line. It dropped several bombs trying to destroy the line. They all missed. I don鈥檛 know what happened to the plane.
One day the main A11 through the town was solid with traffic. There was one continuous line of trucks. We later found out it was part of the preparations for D-Day.
I have to say that as a child in the war it was the most fantastic time of my life. I wish I could change it back.
