11am Sunday morning September 3rd 1939.
I was walking a long the west cliff Ramsgate (pushing my young Nephew in his push chair). It was a lovely sunny morning and the royal habour looked very tranquil.
Sudenly the wailing of sirens disturbed the peace. The police and the wardens shouted " Its war get to the tunnels" (Tunnels were air raid shelters dug out previous years from the white chalk cliffs). I ran like everyone else and we felt a sence of security inside the tunnel. Later the sirens were more frequent especially at night.
One evening we observed two huge red glows across the sea. Someone shouted "thats Dunkirk" . The next day people including myself ans brother gathered clothes food etc for returning troops. As they disenbarked we witnessed many tired and wounded soldiers(English, French and Belgium). They were taken into ambulances and buses. I shall always remember the evacuation of Dunkirk.
